Travel photographer, Dottie Bond, takes us on a 5-day tour of Maine. What do you think of when you think of Maine? I have always thought of lobster rolls and sailboats, coastal fog and thick-bearded lumbermen and the spruce-firs that line the Appalachian Trail as it snakes towards its northern terminus at Katahdin. My visits to the state over the years have confirmed this impression: Maine is a Vacationland par excellence.
So when the opportunity to spend a few days exploring coastal Maine arose, I jumped at it. After attending a wedding in Camden with my friend, Kate, and my dog, Romulus, we headed northeast along the coast to Acadia National Park where we began our 5-day odyssey. We slept at the Seawall Campground on the southwest corner of Mount Desert Island—known as the “quiet side” of Acadia—right down the road from the famous Bass Harbor Lighthouse. There were wild blueberries and vistas of rocky outcrops galore. We stood atop Cadillac Mountain and lunched at Jordan Pond House alongside families beset with squealing kids who cried out for popovers and blueberry crisps. Each day we watched the sun rise and set from a new vantage point along the Atlantic—Bass Harbor, Schooner Head, Thunder Hole. When we were not welcoming the day or biding it farewell, we lazed around Bar Harbor enjoying slow, idle hours sipping coffee while basking under the midday sun. This was summer done right.  ..

Revamping the Overall

Drew BarrymoreIn the 90s overalls were THE thing. Hot TLC girls slinked around in them on stage, Drew Barrymore and Will Smith made them look cool on the big and small screens and the boys who frequented teenage girls’ dreams, ‘N Sync, embraced the look, putting the coveted denim item on all of our wish lists. Fast forward 20 years to the second decade of the 21st century and we wonder, is it still possible to wear overalls? My answer of course is yes. e26fc14555540a3c517e43c2d26cd55d

The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to overalls is the ease of style. They are an easy look for busy moms, who need to run around after their toddlers and pick up groceries too, where a plain shirt and sneakers can round out the look without a problem.

Secondly, overalls are a lifesaver when gardening or doing any household chores, because you can dirty them up without feeling bad about it. Just toss them in the washing machine and they are ready for the next task in a matter of hours.

But, can one wear overalls with style, feeling chic? Again I would say YES. With spring arriving, it’s easy to pull off a cute and even fashion-forward look with this timeless staple. Simply find a more fitted pair, layer under with an interesting blouse and pair with your favorite footwear accompaniment. Finish the look off with a hair band, some bracelets, a great bag and you’re ready for an afternoon off, browsing shops!

Jazz Age Glamour

With movies like Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby in the wings, we felt it was time to honor the real star of the upcoming film, the fashion! The Jazz Age was one of the most exciting eras for style, when the norm was suddenly outdated and the avant-garde was what even your mother was wearing.

Cole Porter summed up the phenomenon best with his lyrics, “In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, but now, God knows, Anything Goes!” It was the dawn of fashion as we know it, ushering in shorter hemlines, gender-bending styles and above all a flair for fun. This collection is a modern twist on the classic looks of the day. A time when oxfords were king, champagne flowed and freedom, glam and femininity rained supreme.Jazz Age Glamour

Featuring styles from Bass, Hush Puppies, Durea, & Dirty Laundry, brands that have perfected the art of modernizing classic looks without sacrificing integrity or comfort. At Shopping Blitz we vehemently believe in the importance of individual style. Never wear what’s popular just because someone else tells you to. Wear what you love and exude what the Roaring 20’s were really all about, the freedom to be yourself!

The Price We Pay: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Perfect Rain Boots

As returns season is upon us it gets me thinking about all the shoes in my closest I’d love to replace. Some were gifts, some choices from an outdated past, damaged pairs and ones that never made sense in the first place. I look at the rain boots under my desk, long-faded from its cute white, pink and purple plaid glory days. They were cheap and have lived-up to the price. Sometimes, unfortunately cheaper doesn’t mean better. Sometimes we need to make an investment in quality. We need to ask ourselves, do I want these for a day, a season, or a lifetime? And then figure out monetarily what we are willing to pay for our choice.

Crocs WelliesMy used and abused golashes have had me perking up at each new brand’s offerings. Crocs Bridle Wellie Rain Boots have been catching my eye the most lately. Designed like a classic riding boot, these waterproof beauties have a cushioned footbed and Crocs proven comfort. Plaid overlay gives the boot an air of respectability and class. That’s a lot to be said for a rain boot and at $66 its an incredible bargain!

Dirty Laundry Rain BootsIf we are going off cuteness factor alone than my mind wanders to Dirty Laundry Rodwell Waterproof Boots. A mid-calf boot whose bold colors and rounded design will add a splash of color to the gloomiest of days. Checking out at $45 they are worth more than a second look. I am partial to the Fushia/Orange, as well as the Green/Navy. Pairs like these make me wish for storm clouds!

And because we should never let the weather slow down our chic, let me present Henry Ferrera Neon Bootsthe Henry Ferrera Neon Boot. Sleek, with a faux crocodile finish, these are the kind of boots that make the statement for you. If I bought these I would call them by City boots. A pair I could use to dress up even an old pair of jeans. Something about heading into Manhattan makes me want to put my best foot forward. Comfort is also key for walking those long city blocks. At $40 you can afford a tough rain jacket to go with it!

Ahnu Laguna BootsMy thinking outside box choice is the Ahnu Laguna Boot. Waterproof patent leathers with easy on/off medical zipper. Contains a U-shaped heel stabilizer for optimum comfort and balance. Its seam-sealed construction keeps water out and heat in! At $160 its a commitment but with this kind of construction they are boots that will grow with you.

My mind is still unmade as I love them all but I hope my ramblings have made the point that fashion need not find its true worth on a price tag. The best finds are often found in the unlikeliest of places! Now go splash in some puddles for me!

Comfort & Style for the Holidays

The Halloween costumes are put away and Thanksgiving dinner has been served. It’s official – The Holidays are here! No matter what event you will be observing this year, I’m pretty sure that a bit of shopping – and the ever so lovely waiting in line – will be involved. If you’re23503229274913751_lejfPUQL_c like me, all that standing and walking around can become quite painful. You start off with the stamina of a five-year old but after a few hours all you’re looking for is the closest bench.

Comfort is the name of the game around this time, especially when it comes to your choice of footwear.  I always assumed that any added height to my shoes would elevate the pain along with my stature.  That is not always the case.  In a mere two months at ShoppingBlitz, I’ve learned that a well-made shoe can not only up the ante on comfort, but achieve it without compromising on style or quality.

For staSBPKL_801-8004rters, I present to you the latest addition to my ‘happy feet’  family, the ever-so-chic Pikolinos Bruja Buckle Boots , shown here in chocolate. With a low 4-cm heel, they add just a touch of height, but oh are they comfy!  The secret is in the gel and foam padded midsole for which Pikolinos is known for. Get yourself a pair of these and your feet will thank you. Then you can thank me later.

Or how about these Sofft Colorado boots?  Belt buckles over SBSFS_1416240smooth, buttery leather are indisputably in for the season. Though they pack a higher 3-inch heel, don’t despair.  These boots are kind to your soles, with extra padding added to the arch, foot and heel. You will come to appreciate the perforated foot bed, allowing airflow, so you won’t be bringing home stinky, tired feet along with your presents.

SBPKL_865-9270For those not-so-chilly fall days, you can trade up the boots for some oxfords by Pikolinos or even these adorable flats by Henry Ferrera.  Padded with gel and foam on the midsole for added comfort, the oxfords are just fun to dress up and you won’t even feel the slight 4cm heel. The Henry Ferrera flats will get yoSBHF_WILD-BLUGLDu through a day of shuffling bags and kids in and out of the car.  The contrast between the wintry blue and the eternally in season cheetah print will bring a lot of attention to your feet. I can’t say enough how much I love these shoes!

Let’s not forget to take care of ourselves in the midst of taking care of others. Be kind to your feet this season, and every other season, and they will take you happily wherever you need to go. And remember, if you can’t make it to the stores, or if you truly are too sore, grab a cup of hot cocoa, curl up on the couch and shop for your loved ones while barefoot and in your pajamas – online!

Product Spotlight: Naturalizer Juletta Boots

Since turning 30 this gal has begun to let go of her tomboy past and embrace the temptress that is fashion. Fueling the flame are all the amazing styles popular this Fall. I find that I want it all in my closet, from the cute dresses over tights and tall gorgeous riding boots to funky flats with colored jeggings. Slowly I am beginning to weed through my shoes and replace the clunkers with classic pieces that I can manipulate into any style I am feeling at the moment.

My most recent purchase from the SB warehouse is the Juletta boot from Naturalizer. These boots are part of the reason that at my age I am developing a shoe obsession. My mother would be so proud! These babies are just stunning. I have somehow wheedled them into most of the decent parts of my wardrobe. They make so-so dresses smile and give old skirts a new lease on flirt. The other ladies in the office and my girls out of it have been experiencing the dreaded shoe envy. Which is no place for a fashionista on the rise to be.

What really set my new boots a part for me was how surprisingly comfortable they were. Normally I am not happy unless I am in flats or flip-flops but these boots have become an extension of my feet. After some research I discovered that for over 80 years Naturalizer has been creating shoes known for their comfort. All Naturalizer footwear features their exclusive N5 comfort system—five essential features that help in providing all day comfort: extra cushioning, breathable linings, balance, flexible soles and lightweight material.

I have no problem running around in them every day at the office and then effortlessly carrying them over into my social time. Which is feat unto itself. Shoes that are day and night friendly are clutch. I never have to bring a change of shoes when wearing the Julettas, unless I am heading to the gym. Which is not enough to even talk about! But since these boots make my legs look so good I try to not let it get me down.  Happy Fashion Hunting!
