Celebrating Earth Day

shutterstock_123176776This April 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, the day has encouraged billions of people to participate in Earth Day activities every year, making it the biggest civic observation in the world. Earth Day has sparked the passage of many profound legislations aimed at preserving our Earth, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act, among many others. The event is orchestrated by the Earth Day Network, which promotes year-round environmental conservation and action worldwide, including promoting greener schools and green economic policies and protecting our air and water.

There are many ways you can participate in Earth Day and advocate for the preservation of the environment all year long. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of things you can do to do your part in protecting the earth.

1. Plant a Tree – Trees pose many benefits for humans and the environment. Trees reduce pollution and energy costs, provide carbon sequestration and cleaner air and water, and cool the air, water and land. They also help decrease soil erosion and the accumulation of sediments in lakes, rivers and streams, as well as provide a home for biodiversity. Choose a tree that is native to your area and can withstand your climate conditions.

2. Clean Up Liter – Participate in a clean-up event in your community. You’ll be working with others to remove litter from roadways, parks, or waterways that have accumulated since the previous clean-up. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to participate in the clean-up with you.

3. Buy Earth-friendly & Recyclable Clothing – Preserve the environment by wearing shoes and clothing made of earth-friendly and recyclable materials, such as hemp, organic cotton and natural fibers. There are many brands that produce apparel and footwear without using materials and processes that could cause harm to the environment, including prANA, Kalso Earth, Merrell and Dr. Martens, just to name a few. Visit ShoppingBlitz.com to shop these brands of shoes and clothes online.

4. Conserve Water – Conserving water is a simple act that goes a long way. Less than 1% of the Earth’s water supply is fresh water that can be used by people, while the rest is salt water or frozen. It’s important that we all do our part to conserve water. Many communities around the world do not have access to clean water supplies. Also, producing and transporting clean water and processing waste water requires a lot of energy. You can reduce the amount of water you use by taking shorter showers, turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth and shave, only running laundry machines and dishwashers when they are full, using refillable water bottles instead of bottled water.

What other ways can you celebrate Earth Day and preserve the environment year-round?

The Hiatus : A Look at 2014 Spring Trends

hello springConfession:  I’ve spent the greater part of this winter hiding under my snuggie. You could say I was staying warm and hibernating or just plain being lazy – and you would certainly be right! Once the clock struck March, I knew I had to get out there, and the excuses just wouldn’t cut it. My motivation, you say? SPRING FASHION, OF COURSE! In the tail end of this never ending winter, I’ve quietly been taking notes and stashing pieces in my closet. Despite the frosty forecast, I know that sooner or later the snow will melt and I have to emerge from this fleeced out cocoon – and I better do it in style. A girl HAS to have her priorities! Without further interruption, I bring to you the most anticipated fashion trends of this upcoming season! Spring 2014 is beckoning us to awaken from our slumber!

1. Wearable Art

SBSSS_757507Beautiful paintings on your wardrobe and shoes will be all the rage this upcoming season. If being a walking Picasso is too much for you, then pack those clothes you love into this bold luggage set that’s impossible to loose at the airport!

2. Roses are Red … and Yellow … and Blue

SBDMT_R15733601The floral motif of these Dr. Martens penny loafers captures the softer, more romantic side of Spring. Pair them with some jeans and a blazer for a subtle floral ensemble. Ready for more flower power? Tuck a bright daisy on the smaller side of your parted hair and throw on a maxi dress in full bloom, such as this V-Neck dress by Lole.

3. Black & White

Classic, fresh and sophisticated, the mixing of black and white patterns can carry you from all business at the 10 AM meeting to the life of the party on a Friday night.  Polka dots, stripes, checkered prints, or just the basic, white tee and black pants – they will all work!

4. Safari

safari

It’s not just cheetah prints and neutrals this season, the jungle has been set loose! If you want to test the waters, try adding a bold shoe, such as the Safari pump by Pinup Couture or even a modest safari hat or sunglasses to get you started.

5. Embellishments

Break out the bedazzler and give those clothes buried in your closet the encore they’ve been waiting for! Give your favorite jeans and edge with some silver studs, or liven up a simple black tee with colored gems. If you’re just beginning, a little bit can go a long way.  For beginners this python studded sandal can add a kick of style to an otherwise demure wardrobe. If you’re ready for more, this Ariat Long sleeve shirt has just the right amount, paired off with a pair of blue jeans & boots and you’re ready to go!

6. Wear What Feels Good

Take in the color palettes, get inspired, and use your imagination! If you haven’t worn a crop top since your first pregnancy, or don’t even know what a bedazzler is, that’s ok! Put your own twist on things. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Even the simplest change, be it a new shade of lipstick or a fresh haircut can you feel renewed this spring.

Fashion News Update

At Shopping Blitz we have the awesome privilege of carrying almost 300 amazing brands. Each brand in of itself is unique and worth getting to know better. Here is a snapshot of some of the cool stuff our Vendors are doing to shake up and change the face of fashion as we know it.

Leandra Medine for SupergaFirst up is my latest sneaker obsession, Superga

The Italian-based company, who inked a deal with Steve Madden as their exclusive North American distributors, is now under the direction of Co-Creative directors, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. The Olsen twins, who have long ago shed their image as the babes from Full House, have developed into savvy business woman and fashion mavens. With this in mind, it is no surprise that the brand has recently joined forces with Leandra Medine, street-style maven, blogger and recent author of a collection of essays entitled ‘The Man Repeller.’  Medine has now created a capsule collection, of the same name of her celebrated essays for Superga’s Fall 2013 collection. The style is young, hip and adaptable. Talk about a revamp on a timeless style!

agyness deynAgness Deyn for Dr. Martens

“I seem to be making characters for each new season. This seasons character is probably the quiet girl in the bunch whose walls are covered in posters of The Yardbirds, The Smiths and The Who” — Agyness Deyn

Model and modern ‘Punk IT girl,’ Deyne has created a new line for Dr. Martens, a brand that has a long rep for epitomizing the fashion essence that is alternative. Ms. Deyne,  embodies the company’s ethos of ‘standing for something.’ Her creative self-expressive style and innovative ideas were the catalysts behind her line, ‘The Third Collection.’ The collection is Deyne’s interpretation of the ‘Mod’ look, a style that has come along way from its inception in the swinging 60’s. The line encompasses clothing, footwear and accessories, with prints influenced by tailored fabrics like houndstooth and herringbone. While Deyne could make a garbage bag look chic,  this collection gives the rest of us a fighting chance.

nicola formichetti for dieselNicola Formichetti named Artistic Director for Diesel

“The fashion industry has to change. It’s so one-dimensional. We have to start somewhere, and Diesel is such a huge power.” — Nicola Formichetti

Former stylist for Lady Gaga, the Italian/Japanese fashion director and editor takes on Diesel and the project of infusing new life into an iconic brand. If you have any interest in fashion or social media, you will have by now seen the #dieselreboot campaign; featuring artistic images of edgy, fresh faced talent. Formichetti eliminated the middleman and went straight for the talent/creatives via a Tumblr page he created for such purposes. The #dieselreboot campaign is all about resetting the clocks, not so much a redo but a fresh shock to the established system. Something one would expect from a fashion innovator who has built his career on renegade styling and campaigns that land with a blast, never a whimper.

My Forever Boots: A Dr. Marten’s Love Story

No matter how many pairs of shoes I own, or how many more I’ll get my hands on and feet in, one pair is going to be with me forever. My original Dr Martens 1460 boots in cherry red. Dr. Martens 1460 Lace UP Boots

I got them in high school, as a present from my parent’s for doing well in school. Even though my parents couldn’t really afford such luxuries, they splurged on me and to this day it is the best present I have ever gotten. Many years have passed since, more than I’m comfortable to admit, but the Dr Martens are still with me. Though bruised here and there, the shoe is in wonderful shape altogether, without any leeks, lost eyelets or broken stitching. I had to replace the laces a couple of times, but that’s all there was to it, a part from cleaning the boots, giving them all-weather protection and a good polish once or twice a year.

The boots and I have done so much stuff together it would be too much to write here, but what is interesting is that that one pair of boots has been my go-to footwear for over a decade now. If it’s raining or snowing, sunny or “meh,” if I do not feel like thinking about what to wear, I simply lace those on and I’m good to go. Doc Martens are perfectly suited for shopping, walking with the dog or alone, going to the movies, dancing and anything you can think of! They are not the warmest boot though so I do put another pair of socks on if I’m going to the shop in a blizzard, but they do keep my feet dry. (As a side note, I had a car literary drive over my foot once (don’t ask), and thanks to the steel toe cap in the shoe, my toes went undamaged.)

To finish this story off, it makes my heart beat a little faster when I see someone buying the red 1460’s from us. I imagine a girl just like me, with all the adventures to come, and wish her all the best. I want her to go places and see things, to experience the joy of life I have experienced.

And then I look at my own feet and remember where my own 1460’s got this scratch, where I bought those crazy black but glow in the dark laces, how my pup tried to chew on them… It feels like one buys much more than a boot with Dr Martens, you know?

What is your go-to shoe? And the story behind it?

Product Spotlight: Dr. Martens Marie Pumps

Dr. Martens‘ Posie collection was created to give it’s owners a lightweight pump perfect for the summer. But I don’t listen to so-called fashion rules and neither should you. I wear what I want when I want. I see no reason why I cannot layer under these beauties and carry them into the fall. Coupled with some knit or cabled tights from Capezio and you will be set for an adventure in any season.

The Marie Pumps come in several colors, and while I am partial to Blueberry & Blackcurrant they are all functional and fabulous in their own ways. A slip-on shoe that can hold its own with a pair of blue jeans or under a skirt or dress. It is versatile and stylish while allowing the wearer the ability to express their individuality.

Fall Darkness is Upon Us

Each new season brings with it exciting new color pallets and cuts, accessories and must haves. Here is our take on the designer catwalks, which we hope will advise you on the styles to come for the upcoming Fall season.

One of the most important trends seen on the runways is the overall use of dark colors. The designers have fallen in love with the goth look, and given us the darkest blacks they could muster on both clothes and shoes. For those who think black is a Karl Lagerfeld signature and not to be taken lightly; dark purples, reds and blues are a few more colorful options.

What covers our bodies is foremost, an over-sized coat, jacket or a sweater. As big as you feel comfortable with, in black preferably, but a nice camel tone might be just the thing if you are looking to cheer up the overall look. One other silhouette to keep in mind is the accentuated waist, sometimes exaggerated to the extreme by additional padding of the hip area. If you are naturally curvaceous that might not be necessary, just show off your assets!

The rest of the ensemble should be fitting, with pants cut of above ankle and skirts mini. You should also try to incorporate at least one fall piece made of luscious brocade or satin with embellishment to your wardrobe, and the brave among us may splurge on a nice pantsuit in the luscious fabric. Leather is taking center stage as well, be it real or fake, and get a jacket – or pants, why not? If you are not as bold, you can always add a leather accent to your wardrobe, like a great high boot or an over-sized bag.

Something is to be said about matching ups and downs this fall, as the runways were full of matching pants and shirts, skirts and jackets. We are not talking about color blocking, but pattern mania, that seems to have taken over even the tamest of designers. Tip: Just make sure it matches.

One last thought that was obvious to the fashion-show goers is the fur. Again, fake or real, it’s up to you, but don’t think donning your mother’s fur coat is going to do the trick. Fur is used as an accent, be it a shawl or a cuff on the shirt, some have made their trimmings fur, the others whole sleeves. The same goes for booties and bags, they have been enveloped in fur and are being worn with pride.

Aside from the fur and the leather accents, shoes on the runways tend to be too high-heeled for a working girl to wear, so your better bet would be to get a more reasonable heel – or a flat – with some studs. Booties are also one of the staples of fall, and were seen with wedge heels, which are more comfortable to wear anyhow. If you are a lover of high boots, be our guest, it is only going to add to your fall glamor.
