For over a year I have been working alongside two working moms. The experience has taught me that there is no one mom style. Moms come in so many different packages and each with their own fashion preferences. Some still rock the stilettos, not letting anything get in the way of them and high-fashion. Others prefer flats and clothes that can be thrown on and off; in the case of spit, throw up and any other gems their kids might throw at them. Still others are into a sporty and athletic style, for a quick trip to the gym in between pick-ups and drop-offs.
One of the few commonalities is that Moms want to look good just like everyone else.
At Shopping Blitz we have a saying around the office, ‘Down with Mom Jeans.’ We hate them that much. Non-flattering and with zero creativity, mom jeans are an ongoing joke and an insult to women everywhere. Mom’s are first and foremost women. In-touch styles, figure flattering cuts and silhouettes and the wow-factor still matter to them, maybe even more so than the single girl. Because they know what they want and have little patience for anything else. In that light, we SB style gurus dedicate this collection to fashionable Mom’s everywhere!

In the 90s overalls were THE thing. Hot TLC girls slinked around in them on stage, Drew Barrymore and Will Smith made them look cool on the big and small screens and the boys who frequented teenage girls’ dreams, ‘N Sync, embraced the look, putting the coveted denim item on all of our wish lists. Fast forward 20 years to the second decade of the 21st century and we wonder, is it still possible to wear overalls? My answer of course is yes.
The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to overalls is the ease of style. They are an easy look for busy moms, who need to run around after their toddlers and pick up groceries too, where a plain shirt and sneakers can round out the look without a problem.
Secondly, overalls are a lifesaver when gardening or doing any household chores, because you can dirty them up without feeling bad about it. Just toss them in the washing machine and they are ready for the next task in a matter of hours.
But, can one wear overalls with style, feeling chic? Again I would say YES. With spring arriving, it’s easy to pull off a cute and even fashion-forward look with this timeless staple. Simply find a more fitted pair, layer under with an interesting blouse and pair with your favorite footwear accompaniment. Finish the look off with a hair band, some bracelets, a great bag and you’re ready for an afternoon off, browsing shops!
With movies like Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby in the wings, we felt it was time to honor the real star of the upcoming film, the fashion! The Jazz Age was one of the most exciting eras for style, when the norm was suddenly outdated and the avant-garde was what even your mother was wearing.
Cole Porter summed up the phenomenon best with his lyrics, “In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, but now, God knows, Anything Goes!” It was the dawn of fashion as we know it, ushering in shorter hemlines, gender-bending styles and above all a flair for fun. This collection is a modern twist on the classic looks of the day. A time when oxfords were king, champagne flowed and freedom, glam and femininity rained supreme.
Featuring styles from Bass, Hush Puppies, Durea, & Dirty Laundry, brands that have perfected the art of modernizing classic looks without sacrificing integrity or comfort. At Shopping Blitz we vehemently believe in the importance of individual style. Never wear what’s popular just because someone else tells you to. Wear what you love and exude what the Roaring 20’s were really all about, the freedom to be yourself!

Everyone who knows me would say the same, that I am a girly girl. That means that I choose feminine clothes and wear pink and red as much as any other color. In fact, if presented with the choice, I usually choose pinkish hues, as they compliment my fair skin and blonde hair.
I understand that most of us who are approaching our third decade on this Earth, and especially those who are older than that, have been raised as boys or girls, and little attention was given to gender specific or unspecific upbringing. That’s why I choose pink and my brother chooses blue, without giving it a second thought.
But, in these more enlightened times, where gender roles are continuously challenged, I enjoy dressing like ‘the other me’. I put my high heels in the closet, hang the form fitting dress with frills on the hanger, and put on a strictly cut tweed pant, with a crisp white shirt. And I adorn my feet with my favorite classic oxfords, Kickers Roxanne, in Dark Beige to make my point. I am as soft or as tough as I want to be, and I am a girl and I am a person. The ‘other me’ loves the cushion-like feel of the oxfords, and I feel strangely free.
Do you enjoy ‘breaking’ the rules when it comes to dressing? Please comment and tell us how!
Most days I love to dress up for the office and take care with my appearance by incorporating fashion into my everyday life. On those perfect days I love to wear makeup and my hair is as close to perfect looking as humanly possible.
But then, there are days when I really do not feel like it, when I am a bit blue, or just tired, most likely from staying up late reading, which is my other passion. On mornings like that, I am late getting up and my mind is not ready to think happy thoughts of closet wonders and putting together the perfect outfit.
Luckily, some time ago I have found a perfect, hassle-free solution to those morning doubts. I just reach into my closet and pull out my wonderful Columbia dress, which I have in both Ocean and Black. I just squeeze myself into a pair of black skinny jeans, put on the first flats I see and throw my hair into a ponytail. For chilly mornings I put a cropped jacket over it, and I am ready to go. In other words, I have more time to drink coffee in peace, and read one more chapter of my latest book…
Call us old-fashioned but we still long for Old New York sometimes. Gritty streets, hard edges, sex, rock & roll and of course style.
The modern Tomboy carries with her an ‘inherent sense of confidence, rebelliousness and adventure.’ Pink and glitter no longer hold the monopoly on fashion & elegance. Think outside the box and find your own style!
