Celebrating Mom’s Individual Style

Moms with StyleFor over a year I have been working alongside two working moms. The experience has taught me that there is no one mom style. Moms come in so many different packages and each with their own fashion preferences. Some still rock the stilettos, not letting anything get in the way of them and high-fashion. Others prefer flats and clothes that can be thrown on and off; in the case of spit, throw up and any other gems their kids might throw at them. Still otDown With Mom Jeanshers are into a sporty and athletic style, for a quick trip to the gym in between pick-ups and drop-offs.
One of the few commonalities is that Moms want to look good just like everyone else.

At Shopping Blitz we have a saying around the office, ‘Down with Mom Jeans.’ We hate them that much. Non-flattering and with zero creativity, mom jeans are an ongoing joke and an insult to women everywhere. Mom’s are first and foremost women. In-touch styles, figure flattering cuts and silhouettes and the wow-factor still matter to them, maybe even more so than the single girl. Because they know what they want and have little patience for anything else. In that light, we SB style gurus dedicate this collection to fashionable Mom’s everywhere!

The Other Me

Everyone who knows me would say the same, that I am a girly girl. That means that I choose feminine clothes and wear pink and red as much as any other color. In fact, if presented with the choice, I usually choose pinkish hues, as they compliment my fair skin and blonde hair. Kickers Roxanne Oxfords

I understand that most of us who are approaching our third decade on this Earth, and especially those who are older than that, have been raised as boys or girls, and little attention was given to gender specific or unspecific upbringing. That’s why I choose pink and my brother chooses blue, without giving it a second thought.

But, in these more enlightened times, where gender roles are continuously challenged,  I enjoy dressing like ‘the other me’. I put my high heels in the closet, hang the form fitting dress with frills on the hanger, and put on a strictly cut tweed pant, with a crisp white shirt.  And I adorn my feet with my favorite classic oxfords, Kickers Roxanne, in Dark Beige to make my point. I am as soft or as tough as I want to be, and I am a girl and I am a person. The ‘other me’ loves the cushion-like feel of the oxfords, and I feel strangely free.

Do you enjoy ‘breaking’ the rules when it comes to dressing? Please comment and tell us how!

Whenever In Doubt …

Most days I love to dress up for the office and take care with my appearance by incorporating fashion into my everyday life.  On those perfect days I love to wear makeup and my hair is as close to perfect looking as humanly possible.Columbia Super Bonehead Dress

But then, there are days when I really do not feel like it, when I am a bit blue, or just tired, most likely from staying up late reading, which is my other passion. On mornings like that, I am late getting up and my mind is not ready to think happy thoughts of closet wonders and putting together the perfect outfit.

Luckily, some time ago I have found a perfect, hassle-free solution to those morning doubts. I just reach into my closet and pull out my wonderful Columbia dress, which I have in both Ocean and Black. I just squeeze myself into a pair of black skinny jeans, put on the first flats I see and throw my hair into a ponytail. For chilly mornings I put a cropped jacket over it, and I am ready to go. In other words, I have more time to drink coffee in peace, and read one more chapter of my latest book…

Comfort & Style for the Holidays

The Halloween costumes are put away and Thanksgiving dinner has been served. It’s official – The Holidays are here! No matter what event you will be observing this year, I’m pretty sure that a bit of shopping – and the ever so lovely waiting in line – will be involved. If you’re23503229274913751_lejfPUQL_c like me, all that standing and walking around can become quite painful. You start off with the stamina of a five-year old but after a few hours all you’re looking for is the closest bench.

Comfort is the name of the game around this time, especially when it comes to your choice of footwear.  I always assumed that any added height to my shoes would elevate the pain along with my stature.  That is not always the case.  In a mere two months at ShoppingBlitz, I’ve learned that a well-made shoe can not only up the ante on comfort, but achieve it without compromising on style or quality.

For staSBPKL_801-8004rters, I present to you the latest addition to my ‘happy feet’  family, the ever-so-chic Pikolinos Bruja Buckle Boots , shown here in chocolate. With a low 4-cm heel, they add just a touch of height, but oh are they comfy!  The secret is in the gel and foam padded midsole for which Pikolinos is known for. Get yourself a pair of these and your feet will thank you. Then you can thank me later.

Or how about these Sofft Colorado boots?  Belt buckles over SBSFS_1416240smooth, buttery leather are indisputably in for the season. Though they pack a higher 3-inch heel, don’t despair.  These boots are kind to your soles, with extra padding added to the arch, foot and heel. You will come to appreciate the perforated foot bed, allowing airflow, so you won’t be bringing home stinky, tired feet along with your presents.

SBPKL_865-9270For those not-so-chilly fall days, you can trade up the boots for some oxfords by Pikolinos or even these adorable flats by Henry Ferrera.  Padded with gel and foam on the midsole for added comfort, the oxfords are just fun to dress up and you won’t even feel the slight 4cm heel. The Henry Ferrera flats will get yoSBHF_WILD-BLUGLDu through a day of shuffling bags and kids in and out of the car.  The contrast between the wintry blue and the eternally in season cheetah print will bring a lot of attention to your feet. I can’t say enough how much I love these shoes!

Let’s not forget to take care of ourselves in the midst of taking care of others. Be kind to your feet this season, and every other season, and they will take you happily wherever you need to go. And remember, if you can’t make it to the stores, or if you truly are too sore, grab a cup of hot cocoa, curl up on the couch and shop for your loved ones while barefoot and in your pajamas – online!

The Point of It: A Fascination with Winter Toes

There is much to be said about the foot fetish, as well as its more specialized cousin, the love of toes. From ancient China and the once popular practice of foot binding, the human fascination with women’s toes is timeless.

In summer, there are many ways to show off your wonderfully pedicured feet and their luscious nail polish; from flip-flops to gladiators and classic sandals to peep-toes. Salons all over the country offer French pedicures, while nail artists are able to create beautiful pieces of art on even the smallest of surfaces.

But what to do when the days become to cold to show off our footsies? Do we completely hide our feet from the elements? The simple answer is no. The longer one is to keep them warm and dry but continue to hint to the fact that you have more to show off than can be seen.

Wear your peep-toes in the autumn and winter by pairing them with a thick pair of opaque tights, provided it is not raining, you can pull it off without no problem. I myself adore the Betsey Johnson Sitan Pumps. Not only are they reasonably priced but they have the ability to bring some joy and fun into the dreary everyday of the cold weather months. Teal or yellow, both sport a lace-up detail on the heel and the back.

That said, in the fashion Metropolis of New York we have seen the streets overflowing with another kind of toe highlight, only packed a bit differently. Dear ladies, it’s called a toe cap and it is all the rage in fashionista circles at the moment. Flats, pumps, boots and oxfords are adorned with contrasting colors or metal caps, and as always Shoppingblitz has stock in what’s hot.

The simple and classic Henry Ferrera 200-Paloma Pump highlights the toe in either orange, blue or pink. Sporting a 3.5 inch heel, they are a wonderful option for those of us who have to juggle work and grocery shopping while running from the subway to the office!

For the bad girls there are the Steve Madden Bolddd Pumps, which are a fetish in of itself, but perfect for a wild night on the town. Pair it with skinny leather pants for maximum rebel appeal.

If you are a lover of all things romantic, steer clear of the above mentioned, and opt for the Funtasma Victorian 45 Boots. With only a 2-inch heel, these beauties offer a sexy twist on classic attire, the lace-up design is made easy by a hidden zipper. Gold and black will go well with any pair of jeans, and will give you an excuse to wear 100 golden bracelets into the winter too.

The classic oxford is revived in the Bass Jolene Oxford. Quality made, leather all over, these will let your feet breathe and feel comfortable all day long. Pair with a pant suit or a pencil skirt for a Mad Men work experience.

Last but not least, Funtasma Mouse 16 Cute Flats, which are, above all, cute. Perfect for the days when you are feeling carefree and a bit silly. Leather, polka dots, and a bow… a bit much if not dressed down with simple black pants. When done right the whole ensemble can become a wonderful and humorous outfit.

Product Spotlight: Naturalizer Juletta Boots

Since turning 30 this gal has begun to let go of her tomboy past and embrace the temptress that is fashion. Fueling the flame are all the amazing styles popular this Fall. I find that I want it all in my closet, from the cute dresses over tights and tall gorgeous riding boots to funky flats with colored jeggings. Slowly I am beginning to weed through my shoes and replace the clunkers with classic pieces that I can manipulate into any style I am feeling at the moment.

My most recent purchase from the SB warehouse is the Juletta boot from Naturalizer. These boots are part of the reason that at my age I am developing a shoe obsession. My mother would be so proud! These babies are just stunning. I have somehow wheedled them into most of the decent parts of my wardrobe. They make so-so dresses smile and give old skirts a new lease on flirt. The other ladies in the office and my girls out of it have been experiencing the dreaded shoe envy. Which is no place for a fashionista on the rise to be.

What really set my new boots a part for me was how surprisingly comfortable they were. Normally I am not happy unless I am in flats or flip-flops but these boots have become an extension of my feet. After some research I discovered that for over 80 years Naturalizer has been creating shoes known for their comfort. All Naturalizer footwear features their exclusive N5 comfort system—five essential features that help in providing all day comfort: extra cushioning, breathable linings, balance, flexible soles and lightweight material.

I have no problem running around in them every day at the office and then effortlessly carrying them over into my social time. Which is feat unto itself. Shoes that are day and night friendly are clutch. I never have to bring a change of shoes when wearing the Julettas, unless I am heading to the gym. Which is not enough to even talk about! But since these boots make my legs look so good I try to not let it get me down.  Happy Fashion Hunting!
