Celebrating Earth Day

shutterstock_123176776This April 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, the day has encouraged billions of people to participate in Earth Day activities every year, making it the biggest civic observation in the world. Earth Day has sparked the passage of many profound legislations aimed at preserving our Earth, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act, among many others. The event is orchestrated by the Earth Day Network, which promotes year-round environmental conservation and action worldwide, including promoting greener schools and green economic policies and protecting our air and water.

There are many ways you can participate in Earth Day and advocate for the preservation of the environment all year long. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of things you can do to do your part in protecting the earth.

1. Plant a Tree – Trees pose many benefits for humans and the environment. Trees reduce pollution and energy costs, provide carbon sequestration and cleaner air and water, and cool the air, water and land. They also help decrease soil erosion and the accumulation of sediments in lakes, rivers and streams, as well as provide a home for biodiversity. Choose a tree that is native to your area and can withstand your climate conditions.

2. Clean Up Liter – Participate in a clean-up event in your community. You’ll be working with others to remove litter from roadways, parks, or waterways that have accumulated since the previous clean-up. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to participate in the clean-up with you.

3. Buy Earth-friendly & Recyclable Clothing – Preserve the environment by wearing shoes and clothing made of earth-friendly and recyclable materials, such as hemp, organic cotton and natural fibers. There are many brands that produce apparel and footwear without using materials and processes that could cause harm to the environment, including prANA, Kalso Earth, Merrell and Dr. Martens, just to name a few. Visit ShoppingBlitz.com to shop these brands of shoes and clothes online.

4. Conserve Water – Conserving water is a simple act that goes a long way. Less than 1% of the Earth’s water supply is fresh water that can be used by people, while the rest is salt water or frozen. It’s important that we all do our part to conserve water. Many communities around the world do not have access to clean water supplies. Also, producing and transporting clean water and processing waste water requires a lot of energy. You can reduce the amount of water you use by taking shorter showers, turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth and shave, only running laundry machines and dishwashers when they are full, using refillable water bottles instead of bottled water.

What other ways can you celebrate Earth Day and preserve the environment year-round?

Shopping Blitz Travelogue Series: The Importance of Packing

As a part of the ShoppingBlitz.com marketing team I am a sucker for planning, especially when it comes to travel. The amazing experiences you receive from visiting a place you have never been is unparalleled. Being prepared for such an adventure can make the experience a once in a lifetime event. On a recent trip to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico I was once again reminded of the importance of packing.

packing list

The first step in any successful trip is intelligent packing. Lists, lists and more lists is the key.

1.  Break down all your anticipated activities into categories and make a list for each.
2. Pack more underwear then you think you will need!
3. If you are going somewhere warm, always pack more than one bathing suit.
4. Think about accessories in terms of outfits, both day and night.
5. Figure out what items you can’t survive without and what you might need in an emergency.
6. Don’t forget to check the weather, research the location and read as many traveler reviews as you can stand!

The correct luggage is also key.  The bags you choose could mean the difference between misery or ease and heaven knows you don’t need added stress at the airport! Backpacks, cross body purses and a carry-on roller are ideal. As you rush to make your flight or attempt to stow away your bags on the plane, you need light and easy to maneuver pieces. It’s also smart to pack an extra bag for souvenirs or dirty clothes for the trip back. Bonus points if you have a matching set of luggage with numerous compartments!

ladies essentials

Above all go into the experience with an open mind. Life happens despite our best plans and its good to be ready for all the ups and downs. Never forget to pack your sense of adventure and playfulness. This is vacation after all and what better time to step out of your comfort zone and try something entirely new! Luckily for you, ShoppingBlitz.com has all your travel needs in one place. Whew! One less thing to check off that list.
